An Ode To Best Friends

22 Feb

Best Friends. Everyone should have at least one.

She is the voice of calm when all around you seems to be in utter chaos.

She can make you laugh through your tears with the blackest humour when you think you have hit rock bottom.

She makes you cry with laughter at her stories, she has the timing of a standup comedian.

She will walk into your house, sweep the cheerios off the kitchen floor and put the kettle on without comment.

She will leave a homemade meal on the doorstep because she has this inate sense that you don’t need tea and sympathy,  but a good feed made by someone else.

Sometimes she can be like a boxing trainer. Plonking you in the corner and tending your wounds whilst looking you straight in the eye and telling you to get back out there, move quicker and roll with the punches.

On nights out you have shared toilet cubicles and had deep discussions about the evils of the thong and the virtues of massive pants.

She still loves to remind you 15 years down the line of the time you drank too much, and she had to retrieve you from the thorny bush you fell into and put you to bed.

She knows all your faults and failings and still loves you. She is completely unshockable. In short, she knows too much!

She is no saint herself and you can tell her as much. But she makes you try harder to be a better human being
